See object file for research notes compiled by the Connecticut River Museum, Essex, Ct., relating to the Westbrook, Ct. shipmaster named Elbert Stannard, Jr. The museum has a logbook or more likely a personal journal kept by Stannard which includes competent watercolor ship portriats. It is possible that our watercolor of the clipper, SENIORITA entering San Francisco was done by this Stannard, most likely at a time when he was between commands, ashore at San Francisco. 481936.0936.000001SHORT DESCRIPTION: Process print in colors (Collotype). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: See Yachting, April-May, 1936, "The fate of the Cup Defenders" by William U. Swan. Part II, May 1936, p. 117. NOTES: The 1903 America's Cup, the 12th challenge for the Cup. It took place in the New York City harbor and consisted of a best of five series of races between Reliance, the fourth of Nathanael Herreshoff's defenders for the cup, entered by the New York Yacht Club; and Shamrock III, representing the Royal Ulster Yacht Club and also the third of Sir Thomas Lipton's Cup challengers. Reliance successfully defended the Cup winning the first three races. VESSEL INFORMATION: VESSEL NAME: RELIANCE VESSEL TYPE: YACHT VESSEL BUILT: 1903 DESIGNER: NATHANAEL HERRESHOFF BUILDER: HERRESHOFF MANUFACTURING COMPANY BUILDER LOCATION: BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND DIMENSIONS: 143’8” length overall, 89’8” waterline length, 25’8” beam, 20’6” draft, 140 tons displacement SHIPOWNER: C. Oliver Iselin and syndicate CAPTAIN: CHARLES BARR HOME PORT: NEW YORK, NEW YORK; NEW YORK, MANHASSET BAY SCRAP DATE: One month after the race was completed VESSEL HISTORY: Reliance was a giant. Although her waterline length was 90 feet, large overhangs at the bow and stern which increased its waterline when sailing from 90’ to over 131’—a tremendous source of speed. Reliance had a highly polished Tobin bronze hull reduced frictional resistance by an astounding 10%. Reliance’s thin 102-ton deep plunging fin-shaped keel counterbalanced its 196-foot tall mast and carried 16,159 square feet of sail. Reliance was fitted with many new innovations like a steel-welded mast with telescopic topmast; two wheels, one with a foot brake to give the helmsman a break; ingeniously designed winches dotted Reliance’s deck in order to handle the enormous loads generated by its large, specially-designed sails; and a hollow rudder that could be filled or emptied of water to help balance the steering.CL19006
